Associate Vice President of Gift Planning, University Advancement

Heather Engel has joined the University of Virginia community as the next Associate Vice President of Gift Planning, University Advancement. Heather has spent the last 15 years at the Rochester Institute of Technology in various advancement leadership roles, most recently in the role of Associate Vice President for University Development and Engagement. Prior to her move to higher education, Heather spent nearly 13 years practicing law in Illinois, Massachusetts, and California. She specialized in estate planning for high net worth individuals.

Executive Vice President for Health Affairs

Dr. K. Craig Kent was recently appointed as executive vice president for health affairs. The senior leadership position oversees UVA Health and its clinical enterprise, which spans the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Kent previously served as dean of The Ohio State University College of Medicine, vice president for health sciences and the Leslie H. and Abigail S. Wexner Dean’s Chair in Medicine.

Quantitative Foundation Associate Dean of Academic and Faculty Affairs

The University of Virginia School of Data Science announces the appointment of Jeffrey D. Blume as the Quantitative Foundation Associate Dean of Academic and Faculty Affairs, effective July 25.

Full Professor, Democracy Initiative

Kristina Richardson joins UVA's Democracy Initiative this fall as the John L. Nau Professor of History and Middle Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures. Previously, she was Associate Professor of History at Queens College and The Graduate Center of the City University of New York. 

Richardson's research interests include non-elite people in the medieval Middle East; manuscript studies; race and labor; and craftsmanship.

Vice President for Research

Melur K. “Ram” Ramasubramanian has been appointed UVA’s Vice President for Research.

Ramasubramanian assumed his position on August 8 and will report to the President. He is currently program director for the Engineering Research Centers program at the National Science Foundation and D.W. Reynolds Distinguished Professor and department chair of Mechanical Engineering at Clemson University, with a joint faculty appointment as professor of bioengineering.

Executive Director, Strategic Communications

Susan Klobuchar joined UVA Engineering as Executive Director, Strategic Communications on August 1, 2023. She will be responsible for enhancing the UVA Engineering brand, leading internal and external communications strategy and execution, serving as a member of the school’s leadership team, and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Department of Communications. In her role, she will help UVA Engineering achieve its mission of making the world a better place by creating and disseminating knowledge and by preparing engineering leaders to solve global challenges.
