Lori L. McMahon has been selected to serve as UVA’s next Vice President for Research following a national search. Her appointment, pending approval by the Board of Visitors, is slated to begin June 15, 2024.
Since the fall of 2021, McMahon has held the same position at the Medical University of South Carolina. She spent the previous two decades largely in leadership roles at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. McMahon, a neuroscientist, directed the University of Alabama's Comprehensive Neuroscience Center for eight years and was Dean of the University of Alabama's graduate school for six years. Since 2001, she has been the leader and principal investigator for a neuroscience lab that has received continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health. Her work has been featured in publications including the Journal of Neuroscience and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. She will continue her research program at UVA.
