Derek Wilson, P.E., LEED AP, CHFM assumed the role of Director of Health System Physical Plant on June 3, 2019. Derek leads an almost 200 person team responsible for the operation and maintenance of facilities for the UVA Health System. He is responsible for over 6.5 million sq. ft. of Hospital and Research maintenance operations and project support groups. He currently manages a portfolio of over 100 individual facilities including a Level 1 trauma hospital with medical flight operations, several million square feet of diverse medical office and clinic spaces, and data center, as well as innovative research facilities with vivarium spaces including BSL-3. His current facility responsibilities total over $4 billion in asset value. Derek has over 30 years’ experience in facilities management, including 12 years with UVA Facilities Management. In 2007 he joined Facilities Planning and Construction as a project manager. In 2009 he became Health System Engineering Manager in HSPP, and was promoted to Deputy Director of Operations, HSPP, in 2011. Prior to joining the University, Derek held positions as Senior Project Engineer and Engineering Manager for Thomasville Furniture Industries, and Project Engineer for Burlington Industries. Derek is a graduate of Clemson University, with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He is past President of the Virginia chapter of Construction Owners of America. He is a Certified Healthcare Facility Manager; and he is a registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
